A Legacy of Faith and Education

Regina Pacis Jakarta was established in 1958 by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM Sisters). Its founding was a response to the educational needs of the Chinese community and foreign nationals living in Jakarta at the time. Initially, the school offered Kindergarten (TK), Primary (SD), and Junior High (SMP) education exclusively for girls.

From the beginning, the institution comprised two educational divisions, Regina Pacis School, with Mandarin as the language of instruction and Regina Pacis International School, with English as the language of instruction

Early Years and Perseverance (1958–1964)

The first Regina Pacis Kindergarten was located on Jl. K.H. Agus Salim, led by Sr. Felicite FMM. In 1962, the Kindergarten moved to Jl. Budi Kemuliaan, sharing a building with the newly established Primary School under the leadership of Sr. M. Ngantonina FMM. In these formative years, the school faced many limitations, especially in infrastructure and resources.

Despite these challenges, the spirit of dedication to education remained strong. In August of the same year, Regina Pacis Junior High School (SMP) was opened at the same location, under Sr. M. Cheng Jowang Paseko FMM. Classes were conducted in a family home adapted into simple classrooms. In the academic year 1963 – 1964, the Junior High School operated with only two rooms for Grade 1 and one room for Grade 2.

Relocation and Expansion (1965–1968)

In 1965, all school units, Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High were relocated to a new campus on Jl. Palmerah Utara I in West Jakarta. That same year, prompted by parents who wished to continue their children’s education, Regina Pacis Senior High School (SMA) was founded by Sr. Elizabeth Tjahjana FMM.

Starting with a single class of 20 students in a modest space above the Primary School, the high school faced severe limitations. Desks were borrowed from the Primary School, and teaching staff were few.

In 1967, the high school moved to a building on Jl. Budi Kemuliaan, previously abandoned and used temporarily by the military (KODIM) as a detention center after the 1965 political unrest (G30S/PKI). Students took part in reviving the school facilities, even raising funds by selling homemade cakes during breaks.

Unification and Growth (1968–Present)

In 1968, Regina Pacis Senior High School returned to Jl. Palmerah Utara I, occupying the former Regina Pacis International School building, which had ceased operations. This marked a new chapter better facilities, progressive development, and a unified school under one system.

This year also marked a historic turning point: Regina Pacis consolidated into a single educational division using Bahasa Indonesia as the medium of instruction and, for the first time, opened its doors to male students. Since then, Regina Pacis Jakarta has remained at its current location, operating under the Adikara Niat Foundation, with Sr. Elizabeth Tjahjana FMM as its first chairperson.

Legacy and Spirit

The story of Regina Pacis Jakarta is one of resilience, devotion, and faith. It reflects the unwavering commitment of the FMM Sisters, educators, parents, and students in their pursuit of quality Catholic education despite limited means.

From humble beginnings, the school has grown into a respected educational institution. With the enduring spirit of Ad Veritatem Per Caritatem toward truth through love Regina Pacis Jakarta continues to move forward, embracing the challenges of the future while staying rooted in the values on which it was founded.
